On Monday 30th November the world’s first independent magazine awards took place in East London. The Stack Awards was a small affair in a basement bar near Old Street on a weekday, and yet the room was buzzing with excited and nervous innovators of indie magazines, many of which were shortlisted for awards on the night.
The awards are the brainchild of Steve Watson, the founder of Stack magazines and Sampler. Steve champions independent print night and day, and speaks from the heart about why this awards event was essential to the industry;
“Independent publishers make some of the world’s most exciting and inspiring magazines, but come awards time they’re virtually invisible. The Stack Awards 2015 is our attempt to put that right”.
Above all else the Awards housed an infectious spirit and a vivid community of image makers, writers, designers and generally nice people. Often we hear the phrase that print is dead. All the titles that were shortlisted, commended, and the few who won awards that night, prove otherwise. This is a creative industry that is doing better than ever before, and is filled with a breadth a of fascinating expertise that only grows. Take a stroll through these winning and commended titles for a glimpse into the best the independent magazine world has to offer:
(L-R) Benji Knewman (commended for Launch of the year) Delayed Gratification (commended for Best non-fiction) The Gourmand (winner of Magazine of the year) Weapons of Reason (double winner on the night – Best use of illustration and Launch of the year)
